Grace Jones and Empire Of The Sun also take to the stage at Polish event

Massive Attack headlined day two of the Heineken Open’er Festival last night (July 2) with a set that saw the duo perform a host of tracks from their recent album ‘Heligoland’ alongside hits ‘Teardrop’ and ‘Girl I Love You’.

Fans ran from the other stages to make sure they didn’t miss the Bristol duo’s show on the Main Stage at the European festival in Gdynia.

“It’s great playing here at sunset, thank you,” said Daddy G as he stood in front of the flashing white and red light panels at the back of the stage.

During the show the band played two tracks from their recent album including ‘Babel’ and ‘Splitting The Atom’ before they wrapped up their performance with ‘Atlas Air’.

Massive Attack played:

‘United Snakes’
‘Babel’
‘Rising Son’
‘Girl I Love You’
‘Mezzanine’
‘Angel’
‘Inertia Creeps’
‘Splitting The Atom’
‘Safe From Harm’
‘Atlas Air’

Over on the Tent Stage, Klaxons topped the bill playing a mixture of songs from debut ‘Myths Of The Near Future’ and forthcoming album ‘Surfing The Void’ including crowd favourites ‘Magick’ and new single ‘Echoes’.

The band seemed surprised by the reaction from the audience, with lead singer Jamie Reynolds telling them: “From the front to the back, you’ve been absolutely crazy, thank you.”

Earlier that day Grace Jones battled technical problems to play to a packed crowd who struggled to fit into the marquee.

“We’ve had some technical difficulties. Can you fix it because I want to shoot everybody here?” she moaned before pushing on with a crowd pleasing set which included ‘Pull Up To The Bumper’ and ‘Nightclubbing’.

Later, Pavement took to the stage for a 1am show which included singles ‘Stereo’ and ‘Shady Lane’.

Over on the Main Stage, Empire Of The Sun closed the music opening their performance with ‘Don’t Want To Talk’ before playing ‘We Are The People’ and ‘Walking On A Dream’ for a theatrical show which saw the band wearing their trademark head dresses.

Today (July 3) Kasabian, Hot Chip and Regina Spektor are set to play the festival. NME.COM will have a full report.

Massive Attack, MGMT and Thievery Corporation are the first names confirmed for the inaugural Moogfest.

Taking place in Asheville, North Carolina on October 29-31, the festival will celebrate the life and legacy of Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer.

Bob Moog changed the course of music as we know it,” organiser Ashley Capps said in a statement. “He put new worlds of sound literally at the fingertips of musicians, unleashing a creative revolution. We’re thrilled and honored to be able to celebrate his extraordinary legacy in the place that he called home and we hope to do so for many years to come.”

In addition to the music a number of workshops, panel discussions, visual art exhibitions and film screenings will also take place as part of the event.

Band set to release limited-edition record to mark 15th birthday of 'Help' album

Massive Attack are releasing a limited-editon EP in aid of War Child.

The ‘Atlas Air’ EP will mark the 15-year anniversary of the organisation’s ‘Help’ album, which saw a group of artists record a charity album in a limited time.

The release will feature the title track and a remix of it by the DFA‘s Tim Goldsworthy, plus new song ‘Redlight’, which features Elbow‘s Guy Garvey, and a remix of that track.

The release will be available digitally and on 12-inch vinyl which is limited to 1,000 numbered copies. A short film for ‘Atlas Air’ will also feature.

“The initial pitch to support War Child and ‘Help’ wasn’t difficult: children are the innocent victims of war. We were quick to get involved,” said the band’s Robert Del Naja of their involvement.

“What’s so great about War Child is they continue to make great albums and events. It wasn’t a one-off, it’s an ongoing project and that can have an effect long-term.”

Robert '3D' Del Naja admits 'it's more fun putting things out randomly'

Massive Attack have revealed that they will “spontaneously” release new music during 2011.

The duo’s Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja admitted that “it’s more fun putting things out randomly”.

“We got quite a bit of EPs out next year,” he told Spinner. “We’re tired of the cycle of album, tour. It’s more fun putting things out randomly, sort of spontaneously. We’ve done it quite traditionally this year, so maybe next year, a bit unorthodox.”

Meanwhile, the pair will release the ‘Atlas Air EP’ on November 22. The new four-track EP will include two new mixes of ‘Atlas Air’, plus a new song called ‘Redlight’, which features Elbow‘s Guy Garvey. Proceeds from the EP will be donated to War Child.

Currently on tour in North America, the pair will next play tomorrow (October 26) at the Bayfront Park Amphitheater in Miami, Florida.

Collaboration recently featured at Cannes Film Festival

Massive Attack have recorded a new song with Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson.

The dance duo have teamed up with the Lost In Translation star for the track ‘Summertime’, which features as the main song in Mexican movie Days Of Grace, reports WENN.

The film, which tells the story of three different characters during three World Cups, recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France earlier this month.

Johansson also recently recorded the track ‘One Whole Hour’ for a documentary on autism entitled Wretches & Jabberers.

In 2008 the actress recorded a Tom Waits covers album ‘Wherever I Lay My Head’. Two years earlier she recorded another album, ‘Break Up’, with Pete Yorn which eventually saw the light of day in the US in 2009.

She is set to appear in the superhero movie The Avengers alongside Samuel L Jackson and Robert Downey Jr next year.

Shara Nelson allegedly told Tong's colleagues she was his wife and mother of his child

Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong has been granted a restraining order against former Massive Attack singer Shara Nelson.

The DJ told a West London magistrates court that the singer had harassed him with nuisance calls and told his colleagues that she was his manager, reports The Sun.

During the court proceedings, Nelson even gave her surname as Tong and claimed she had married the DJ and had his child. Tong confimed that neither of these statements are correct.

Nelson, who sang with Massive Attack on their 1991 hit single ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ and on a number of other tracks on their debut album ‘Blue Lines’, has been banned indefinitely from contacting Tong or his friends and family. She has also been issued with a 12-month community order and will have to complete 80 hours of community service.

A spokesman for Pete Tong declined to comment about the case.

Electronic heavyweights team up for remix project

Massive Attack have posted the first track from their new collaboration with Burial online – scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to listen.

‘Four Walls’ is taken from the Massive Attack vs Burial split 12″ ‘Four Walls’/’Paradise Circus’, which sees the London DJ and producer remix two tracks by the Bristol-based group. ‘Four Walls’ is a previously unheard track, while ‘Paradise Circus’ featured on Massive Attack’s 2010 album ‘Heligoland’.

A limited edition vinyl version of ‘Four Walls’/’Paradise Circus’ will be released on October 17, which will include a hand-numbered sleeve and artwork designed by Massive Attack’s Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja. However, the 1,000 copies have now sold out and are no longer available to order online.

Burial released his comeback single ‘Street Halo’ earlier this year. The track, which was released in March, was his first solo release since 2009. His last studio album, ‘Untrue’, was released in 2007.

His collaboration songs with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Four Tet were also released earlier this year.

Stars including Gary Barlow, Tinchy Stryder and Chipmunk, meanwhile, have recorded a cover of Massive Attack’s song ‘Teardrop’ for this year’s Children In Need campaign.

Massive Attack’s 3D releases free mixtape featuring Terry Callier – listen

Producer posts 'The Windmill Sessions' online

Massive Attack producer 3D has released a free mixtape featuring late singer Terry Callier – scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to listen.

American guitarist and singer-songwriter Callier passed away at the age of 67 in October of this year. As part of his storied 50-year career, he worked with Massive Attack in his 2009 comeback album ‘Hidden Conversations’.

Now, 3D has posted a free mixtape featuring recordings he made with Callier at a studio in Bristol. He wrote: “Me and Euan reloaded the Terry Callier tapes from 2005. It felt right to honour the short time we had with him Bristol.

“We created a ‘mix tape’ of the pieces I worked on with Neil and Terry.I also took the liberty of stripping them back to a more personal space and cut in alternative vocals and chuckles, in an attempt to share a little of the spirit of the great man,” he added.

Terry Callier’s 50-year career began when he signed to Chess Records in 1962, aged just 17. Leaving behind the doo-wop sound of his teenage years, his most famous trio of albums – 1972’s ‘Occasional Rain’, 1973’s ‘What Color Is Love’ and 1974’s ‘I Just Can’t Help Myself’ exemplified the hybrid of funk, soul and jazz that he created.

Callier quit music to study computer programming and sociology in the 1980s, but his cult grew through the patronage of the UK’s Acid Jazz label and a younger generation of singer-songwriters, and he was eventually lured back to performing and recording. He collaborated with British singer-songwriter Beth Orton in 1997, appearing on her ‘Best Bit’ EP, before working with Massive Attack on ‘Hidden Conversations’.

Massive Attack v Adam Curtis open Manchester International Festival

Disturbing show is one of many premieres at the biennial event

The 2013 Manchester International Festival opened last night (July 4) with an audio-visual performance by Massive Attack v Adam Curtis.

Taking place in the long-abandoned Mayfield Depot in central Manchester, the event combined the musical and visual work of Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja with the cinematic expertise of filmmaker Adam Curtis, best known for his 2002 film The Century of the Self.

The production between the two was also a collaboration with United Visual Artists (who have previously created visual shows for Massive Attacks tours) and featured appearances from Horace Andy and Cocteau Twins singer and former Massive Attack collaborator Liz Fraser.

After milling around in the dimly-lit former railway building, the large crowd was eventually ushered through a black curtain into the performance area. The room was flanked on three sides by 11 large screens, around 25 feet high. Vintage footage of a Siberian disco began to play on the large screens, intercut with Curtis’ trademark large font sloganeering and text commentary. A male voice commentated throughout, as the historical footage showed scenes from around the world, primarily from the 1970s to the present day. The commentator spoke early on of the ‘dream’ world, a utopia, being replaced by a new idea: a ‘managed world’ in which we are “controlled by the grip of the ghosts of the past”.

The accompanying music – which spanned from Siberian punk to a rave version of Sugababes’ ‘Push The Button’ – was underpinned by sound effects, as the noise of gunshots and bombs rattled the building. When the light of the projection on the screen allowed it, the musicians could be seen onstage. As Liz Fraser sang of ‘The Look Of Love,’ her face was projected onto the screen in front of the stage, and her diminutive frame lit behind it. Horace Andy sang towards the end of the performance; a version of ‘Sugar Sugar’, which spurred several couples to dance as the grainy cold war-era footage played out on the screens that surrounded them.

As the commentator began to talk about the end of the cold war, Massive Attack played one of their biggest hits, ‘Karmacoma’. Tonight was the first time that the band had played live in the UK since 2010 and the audience cheered each time they caught a glimpse of the pioneering Bristolians onstage. At the end, Curtis left a final message for the audience that read, in large lettering: “NOW FIND YOUR OWN WAY HOME.” Exiting the venue involved walking down a tunnel that was dark, except for a blinding searchlight that swept up and down the length of the passage. A large German Shepherd on a leash barked fiercely at audience members as they left the building.

A crowd gathered outside, reflecting on the experience. 23 year-old Glaswegian Murray explained: “I came down specifically for this… I had to come today. I’m a huge fan of Adam Curtis’ work. It was really good. It’ll take me a bit of time to digest it, it was interesting. The exit was really cool, I think I liked that even more. I wanted to stay for longer.”

Massive Attack: ‘There’s a whole album’s worth of new material’

The band last released an album in 2010 with 'Heligoland'

Massive Attack‘s Robert Del Naja – aka 3D – has said that the band have recorded an album’s worth of new material.

Speaking to Gigwise, Del Naja discussed the progress of the follow-up to 2010’s ‘Heligoland’, saying that though there was lots of new material, it was unfinished.

“To be honest there’s a whole album of new material sitting in a studio at the moment which isn’t finished and hasn’t been played at all yet,” he commented. “There’s one track I’ve done with Tricky… but I’ve gotta play it live with him really, and that’s not ready for this tour yet as it would have just been a bit haphazard to throw it in there for these shows.” Massive Attack closed the Other Stage at Glastonbury festival on Sunday (June 29) night.

He said that the band’s sixth album would be inspired by their work with documentary maker Adam Curtis. “At the moment I’m thinking that on this record we’ve been concentrating on songs and the inspirations for them. Working with Adam last year saw us hear a lot of old pop songs which I guess made us look at things in a different way,” he explained.

Massive Attack teamed up with Curtis, famous for his films such as All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace, for shows at Manchester’s International Festival, entitled Massive Attack vs Adam Curtis. The production between the two was also a collaboration with United Visual Artists (who have previously created visual shows for Massive Attacks tours) and featured appearances from Horace Andy and Cocteau Twins singer and former Massive Attack collaborator Liz Fraser.

Track original appeared on 2010 album 'Heligoland'

Massive Attack were joined on-stage by TV On The Radio lead vocalist Tunde Adebimpe for what was their first ever live performance of ‘Pray For Rain’.

Consequence of Sound
reports that the song formed part of the Bristol group’s encore at a gig at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday night (October 16). Click above to watch fan-recorded footage of the performance.

Adebimpe co-wrote and provided vocals on the original track, which opened Massive Attack’s 2010 album ‘Heligoland’. While that remains their most recent album, founding member 3D has said that the band have recorded enough new material to fill a new record. Speaking in July, 3D – real name Robert Del Naja – discussed the progress of the follow-up.

“To be honest there’s a whole album of new material sitting in a studio at the moment which isn’t finished and hasn’t been played at all yet,” he said.

Duo launch new app ahead of rumoured new album release

Massive Attack have launched a new app called ‘Fantom’, which features new music from the group.

As Pitchfork reports, the app includes snippets of four new songs (‘Dead Editors’, ‘Ritual Spirit’, ‘Voodoo In My Blood’ and ‘Take It There’) and allows you to mix the tracks in real time. Find more information here.

The Fantom app was in part designed by the group’s own Robert del Naja, and has been described as a “sensory music player that remixes and reforms songs uniquely using a variety of environmental variables including location, movement, time of day, heartbeat and the integral moving image camera.”
