Supermodel stars in the video for the title track from Massive Attack's recent EP

Massive Attack have released their new video ‘Ritual Spirit’, which stars Kate Moss. Scroll down to watch.

The iconic supermodel dances with a naked bulb in the video, which was directed by Medium and group member Robert “3D” Del Naja.

“Me and Kate have been friends for years, but had never collaborated, so last year we booked a studio with Medium and set up a shoot,” Del Naja explained. “During the session Kate was dancing in the dark, lighting herself with a naked bulb. She perfectly captured the essence of this track… intimate and ritualistic.”

“We edited it back in Bristol to keep it raw with no re-touching, I didn’t want to lose the spirit of that moment,” he added.

Moss, who has previously appeared in music videos by The White Stripes, Paul McCartney and Elton John, said of their collaboration: “I have always been a huge fan of Massive Attack and 3D has been a friend for many years. When he asked me to collaborate with him I didn’t have to think twice. I always thought their visuals were amazing and I was proud to be in this video.”

‘Ritual Spirit’, which features East London singer-songwriter Azekel, is the title track from Massive Attack’s four-track EP which dropped in January. Last week (March 7) the group were announced as headliners for one of this summer’s Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park shows.

Massive Attack have announced their biggest hometown concert yet, set to take place later this year.

The group will perform in front of an audience of tens of thousands of fans at Bristol Downs on September 3rd.

The outdoor gig is their first major show in the city since 2004 and also the first time in 15 years that the Downs have played host to a large-scale music event.

Primal Scream and Skepta have been confirmed as support acts for the day-long event, with more to follow.

Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja, better known as 3D, said that he hopes the concert will become an annual fixture.

“We are curating what we hope will become an annual event something made in Bristol with an international reach. We will also use the project to engage with the important social and political issues of the day,” he said.

Massive Attack released an EP, ‘Ritual Spirit’, in January. The record, which was the first new music from the band since 2010, features Scottish Mercury Prize-winners Young Fathers and the return of Tricky, who hasn’t recorded with the the group since 1994.

In March, the group unveiled the video for the EP’s title track which stars Kate Moss. The band also revealed that they will headline one of this summer’s Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park shows.

So we’re arranging for a fleet of buses to take people from Bristol to our show in London’s Hyde Park… at no extra charge. On Friday (July 1), Massive Attack headlined the first night of this year’s British Summer Time festival at London’s Hyde Park. As well as the Bristol-bred duo, the line-up consisted of TV on the Radio, Patti Smith, Warpaint, Ghostpoet and Young Fathers.

During the set, Massive Attack performed their 1994 song ‘Eurochild’ for the first time in 18 years. It was seemingly a response to the EU referendum results, with the 3D stating: “We didn’t expect to be singing this 20 years later as a requiem.”

He continued, “As sons of immigrants, we are both very disappointed with the situation. We can’t allow ourselves to fall victim to the populist bullshit going on at the moment. We can’t let the bigots and racists back into this situation. It’s bullshit.”

The band also welcomed Tricky onto the stage for a performance of ‘Take It There’. The trip-hop musician, who has collaborated with the Bristol band throughout their career appears on several tracks on their seminal 1991 debut album ‘Blue Lines’.

Despite Tricky’s longtime association with Massive Attack, he has only appeared with the band on stage very rarely in the past. In May, Massive Attack announced their biggest hometown concert yet, set to take place later this year.

The group will perform in front of an audience of tens of thousands of fans at Bristol Downs on September 3rd. The outdoor gig is their first major show in the city since 2004 and also the first time in 15 years that the Downs have played host to a large-scale music event. Massive Attack have released new music through their app Fantom.

As Pitchfork reports, snippets of new tracks called ‘Come Near Me’ and ‘The Spoils’ can now be listened to and remixed using the so-called ‘sensory mixer’ app.

Designed in part by the group’s own Robert del Naja, the Fantom app was launched earlier this year. It’s described as a “sensory music player that remixes and reforms songs uniquely using a variety of environmental variables including location, movement, time of day, heartbeat and the integral moving image camera.”

Massive Attack previously used Fantom to preview tracks from their ‘Ritual Spirit’ EP shortly before the four-track collection received a more traditional release in January of this year.

Earlier this month (July), Massive Attack headlined the first night of this year’’s British Summer Time festival at London’s Hyde Park. During the set, Massive Attack performed their 1994 song ‘Eurochild’ for the first time in 18 years. It was seemingly a response to the previous month’s EU referendum results, with group member 3D stating: “We didn’t expect to be singing this 20 years later as a requiem.”

Massive Attack are now preparing to play a huge homecoming show at Bristol Downs on September 3, with Primal Scream and Skepta confirmed as support for the all-dayer.

Get downloading

The 'Biophilia' project was as educational as it was musical, involving school workshop programs to help children understand how music and science mesh. Students would get to play with Bjork's new instruments or extract DNA from an onion.

Taylor Swift recently announced that she would be launching her own app, The Swift Life, which is expected to bring her even closer to her already tight-knit community of fans. Swift isn’t the first to venture into the app world though – many artists before her also turned to interactive software as a marketing tool. Here are five she should take inspiration from.

1. Björk: Biophilia

What the app does: Explores a three-dimensional galaxy, allowing users to select constellations named after Björk’s songs to interact with different features, games and facts about them.
Why it’s great: The visuals are strikingly beautiful and it even allows you to view scrolling music notations while listening.
How to get it: Biophilia can be downloaded for free on iOS and Android.

2. Tyler the Creator: Golf Media

What the app does: Dive into Tyler’s world – from a playlist of his favourite songs to his pick of the movies showing near you.
Why it’s great: It offers endless recommendations of media to check out.
How to get it: Access the app through subscribing on the website here.

3. Lady Gaga: ARTPOP

What the app does: When this app was active, you could fully experience the world of Gaga by creating your own ‘aura’, which adapted over time and interacted with other ‘Little Monsters’.
Why it was great: As well as the ‘aura’ magic, you got to play ARTPOP on a virtual turntable.

4. Calvin Harris: 18 Months

What the app does: Lets you listen to Calvin’s third album, featuring hits such as Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’.
Why it’s great: You had to move to hear the tunes – making it a good running motivator.
How to get it: 18 Months is free to download on iOS and Android.

5. Massive Attack: Fantom

What the app does: Gave you a sneak peak into four new tracks from the trip-hop group’s ‘Ritual Spirit’ EP.
Why it’s great:
You could try your own hand at remixing parts of the songs and sharing the result with friends after.
How to get it:
This is a free app only available for download on iOS devices.

"Nostalgia nightmare roadshow"

Massive Attack with Pete Tong
Massive Attack with Pete Tong

Massive Attack have hit out at Pete Tong for covering their seminal single ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ for his ‘Ibiza Classics’ album without their permission.

Tong’s ‘Ibiza Classics’ album and tour sees him reimagine huge tracks by the likes of Daft Punk, Moby, Rob Dougan, Basement Jaxx – but with the Heritage Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley.

However, the trip-hop duo have slammed the project as a “nostalgia nightmare roadshow”, and have urged him to donate proceeds to aid the refugee crisis.

Taking to Facebook, 3D wrote on behalf of the band:

“Dear Pete Tong
“Thanks for covering one of our songs on your nostalgia nightmare roadshow.
“I don’t recollect you getting in touch to see if we would mind,
“but for your information:
“When we play that song we display photos of displaced people in refugee camps by the photographer Giles Duley on the screen to raise awareness for their plight and collect money for UNHCR.
“If you do mean to carry on coining it, why don’t you divide your nightly profit by the number of songs you murder in your set, and hand the total of that one song over to UNHCR..
“It would be the least you could do.
“Cheers
“3D”

Tong is yet to respond to the band’s claims.

Massive Attack have announced they are leaving Facebook following the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal.

This weekend (March 17), it emerged the political data firm that was hired by Donald Trump‘s 2016 election campaign collected private information from 50 million Facebook users without their knowledge.

The Bristol group have now deleted their official Facebook page. In a statement on their Twitter page, they wrote: “In light of FB’s continued disregard for your privacy, their lack of transparency and disregard for accountability – Massive Attack will be temporarily withdrawing from FB.”

Fans are being encouraged to visit the band’s official website for updates and news while their Facebook page is inactive.

Last year, Massive Attack hit out at Pete Tong for covering their seminal single ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ for his ‘Ibiza Classics’ album without their permission.

The record and accompanying tour saw the DJ reimagine huge tracks by the likes of Daft Punk, Moby, Rob Dogan, Basement Jaxx and more, with the assistance of the Heritage Orchestra and conductor Jules Buckley.

Bristol trip-hop duo recently left Facebook following Cambridge Analytica scandal

Massive Attack have announced bizarre plans to re-release their 1998 album ‘Mezzanine’ in the form of DNA.

Today (April 20) marks the 20th anniversary of the landmark LP from the Bristol trip-hop duo and the band have decided to mark the occasion by encoding the record into DNA.

Massive Attack have set about this feat by using technology developed by STEM University ETH Zurich, in Switzerland.

The album’s digital audio files will be converted into 920,000 short DNA strands, which will then be stored in 5,000 tiny (nanometre-sized) glass spheres.

‘Mezzanine’ is apparently the second-largest file ever stored using DNA.

Last year, it was announced Miles Davis’ track ‘Tutu’ would be one of the first songs to be encoded in DNA.

Meanwhile, Massive Attack recently announced they were leaving Facebook following the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Band set to release limited-edition record to mark 15th birthday of 'Help' album

Massive Attack are releasing a limited-editon EP in aid of War Child.

The ‘Atlas Air’ EP will mark the 15-year anniversary of the organisation’s ‘Help’ album, which saw a group of artists record a charity album in a limited time.

The release will feature the title track and a remix of it by the DFA‘s Tim Goldsworthy, plus new song ‘Redlight’, which features Elbow‘s Guy Garvey, and a remix of that track.

The release will be available digitally and on 12-inch vinyl which is limited to 1,000 numbered copies. A short film for ‘Atlas Air’ will also feature.

“The initial pitch to support War Child and ‘Help’ wasn’t difficult: children are the innocent victims of war. We were quick to get involved,” said the band’s Robert Del Naja of their involvement.

“What’s so great about War Child is they continue to make great albums and events. It wasn’t a one-off, it’s an ongoing project and that can have an effect long-term.”

Robert '3D' Del Naja admits 'it's more fun putting things out randomly'

Massive Attack have revealed that they will “spontaneously” release new music during 2011.

The duo’s Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja admitted that “it’s more fun putting things out randomly”.

“We got quite a bit of EPs out next year,” he told Spinner. “We’re tired of the cycle of album, tour. It’s more fun putting things out randomly, sort of spontaneously. We’ve done it quite traditionally this year, so maybe next year, a bit unorthodox.”

Meanwhile, the pair will release the ‘Atlas Air EP’ on November 22. The new four-track EP will include two new mixes of ‘Atlas Air’, plus a new song called ‘Redlight’, which features Elbow‘s Guy Garvey. Proceeds from the EP will be donated to War Child.

Currently on tour in North America, the pair will next play tomorrow (October 26) at the Bayfront Park Amphitheater in Miami, Florida.

Shara Nelson allegedly told Tong's colleagues she was his wife and mother of his child

Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong has been granted a restraining order against former Massive Attack singer Shara Nelson.

The DJ told a West London magistrates court that the singer had harassed him with nuisance calls and told his colleagues that she was his manager, reports The Sun.

During the court proceedings, Nelson even gave her surname as Tong and claimed she had married the DJ and had his child. Tong confimed that neither of these statements are correct.

Nelson, who sang with Massive Attack on their 1991 hit single ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ and on a number of other tracks on their debut album ‘Blue Lines’, has been banned indefinitely from contacting Tong or his friends and family. She has also been issued with a 12-month community order and will have to complete 80 hours of community service.

A spokesman for Pete Tong declined to comment about the case.

His collaboration songs with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Four Tet were also released earlier this year.

Producer posts 'The Windmill Sessions' online

Massive Attack producer 3D has released a free mixtape featuring late singer Terry Callier – scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to listen.

American guitarist and singer-songwriter Callier passed away at the age of 67 in October of this year. As part of his storied 50-year career, he worked with Massive Attack in his 2009 comeback album ‘Hidden Conversations’.

Now, 3D has posted a free mixtape featuring recordings he made with Callier at a studio in Bristol. He wrote: “Me and Euan reloaded the Terry Callier tapes from 2005. It felt right to honour the short time we had with him Bristol.

“We created a ‘mix tape’ of the pieces I worked on with Neil and Terry.I also took the liberty of stripping them back to a more personal space and cut in alternative vocals and chuckles, in an attempt to share a little of the spirit of the great man,” he added.

Terry Callier’s 50-year career began when he signed to Chess Records in 1962, aged just 17. Leaving behind the doo-wop sound of his teenage years, his most famous trio of albums – 1972’s ‘Occasional Rain’, 1973’s ‘What Color Is Love’ and 1974’s ‘I Just Can’t Help Myself’ exemplified the hybrid of funk, soul and jazz that he created.

Callier quit music to study computer programming and sociology in the 1980s, but his cult grew through the patronage of the UK’s Acid Jazz label and a younger generation of singer-songwriters, and he was eventually lured back to performing and recording. He collaborated with British singer-songwriter Beth Orton in 1997, appearing on her ‘Best Bit’ EP, before working with Massive Attack on ‘Hidden Conversations’.
