Win Butler from Arcade Fire, Robert Del Naja lead singer of Massive Attack, Maxim of The Prodigy

Bilbao BBK Live have announced Arcade Fire, Massive Attack, The Prodigy and more for the 2024 line-up.

The Spanish festival, which takes place from July 11-13, 2024, will also see Jungle, Overmono, Ezra Collective, Floating Points, Underworld, Noname, Khruangbin, JPEGMAFIA, Death From Above 1979, Alvvays, Los Bitchos, Parcels and more perform.

General sale tickets for the festival will go live this Friday (December 1) at 9am GMT from here, or fans can alternatively access a special pre-sale from Wednesday (November 29) at 9am GMT time until 9am December 1. Find the full line-up in the poster below.

Next year marks the second summer of festival slots for Arcade Fire since allegations of sexual misconduct arose against frontman Win Butler.

Butler responded to the accusations of “inappropriate” actions in a statement, claiming he was “very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behaviour” but maintaining that “these relationships were all consensual”.

Butler’s wife and Arcade Fire bandmate Régine Chassagne also shared her own statement, in which she said: “I know he has never, and would never, touch a woman without her consent and I am certain he never did.”

Last August the band continued with their European tour despite the allegations, and went on to headline festivals this year like MEO Kalorama in Lisbon, Cala Mijas in Spain and Corona Capital in California.

Reviewing last year’s Bilbao BBK Live – where the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Pavement performed – NME wrote that the event “continues to stand at the forefront of the European festival circuit”.

The festival takes place in in Kobetamendi, or Mount Cobetas, a short journey from Bilbao city centre.

2024 headliners The Prodigy this month completed their own European tour, which included two nights at Alexandra Palace in London over the weekend. They have also been announced for HellFest Open Air 2024, which takes place from June 27-30, 2024 in Clisson, France.

Massive Attack

Massive Attack are set to perform their first live UK show in five years in 2024 with a summer climate action event in Bristol.

The trip-hop collective have announced Act 1.5, an all-day “large-scale climate action accelerator event” taking place August 25, 2024 at Clifton Downs in their hometown of Bristol, which will see Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja and Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall play their first concert on UK soil in five years.

The event will mark 25 years of climate activism for the band, and it’s set to be the lowest carbon show of its size ever staged. Special guests are also due to be announced to join the line-up for the event.

Fans can sign-up for pre-sale tickets here by entering the first half of their postcode when asked. A localised ticket pre-sale will start 10 GMT Wednesday (December 6), before general sale tickets go on sale Friday (December 8), with the live time set to be confirmed.

Massive Attack’s Del Naja, AKA 3D, shared in a statement: “We’re chuffed to play our home city again and to be able do it in the right way. In terms of climate change action there are no excuses left; offsetting, endless seminars and diluted declarations have all been found out – so live music must drastically reduce all primary emissions and take account of fan travel. Working with pioneering partners on this project means we can seriously move the dial for major live music events & help create precedents that are immediately available.”

The event will celebration their collaboration with climate scientists and analysts from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, which has included the band’s commissioning of a compatible roadmap for decarbonisation of the Live Music Sector.

The band had previously planned a prototype show in Liverpool, but were unable to go ahead due to Covid-19 pandemic and their boycotting of an Arms Fair being held in the city.

Decarbonisation measures that will be taken for the show will include a localised pre-sale – available to Bristol, Bath and the surrounding Gloucestershire, Swindon and Taunton area postcodes – to to deter private car travel, the use of renewable energy and a rail travel incentive initiative.

Professor Carly McLachlan from The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research said in a statement: “This is precisely the type of transformative approach that we need to see more of in the live music sector and indeed every sector; one that has the collaboration and vision to reduce emissions across all areas of impact and working beyond the areas you directly control to unlock the systemic change we urgently need to deliver on our Paris Agreement commitments”.

Massive attack will also be performing in Spain at Bilbao BBK Live next summer, which takes place from from July 11-13, 2024.

Back in October, Massive Attack guitarist Angelo Bruschini died just months after revealing his lung cancer diagnosis. The news was shared by the band, who described the guitarist as “a singularly brilliant & eccentric talent”.

Massive Attack, Fontaines D.C. and Young Fathers

Fontaines D.C., Massive Attack and Young Fathers have teamed up for a limited edition 12” single to support the charity Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

The release, which is available to pre-order now, will feature material by Fontaines and a collaboration between Young Fathers and Massive Attack, alongside a sleeve and print designed by Robert Del Naja.

100 per cent of the profits from the single will be donated to the charity to help their emergency operations in Gaza and the West Bank. In a statement, the artists have also called for an immediate ceasefire in the region, “in solidarity with the Palestinian people living under a brutal military operation”

The reverse of the sleeve includes a quote from a hospital whiteboard in Gaza written by MSF medic Dr. Mahmoud Abu Nujaila: “Whoever stays until the end will tell the story. We did what we could. Remember us”. Nujaila was killed a few weeks later.

No more details of the tracks on the single have yet been provided, but it is available to pre-order here. In addition, there will also be a limited edition, artist-signed large-print sale of the single’s artwork, available here.

Massive Attack’s 3D said: “The hourly scenes of horror in Gaza, with hospitals and schools bombed to dust and innocent civilians, journalists and doctors killed in unspeakable numbers has been made so much worse by more than ten weeks of abject political failure.

We’re in awe of the Doctors Without Borders medics who place their lives on the line to help innocent civilians in Gaza. The ceasefire EP is a tribute to them, and their incredible ongoing work in truly indescribable circumstances. We stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine”

“Fontaines DC join millions across the world in demanding an immediate ceasefire and a permanent end to Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine,” added the Irish band.

“Since October, Doctors Without Borders have been on the ground in Gaza, where every human is an IDF target, risking their lives to give vital care to the thousands injured by Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on the starving and defenceless. We feel utterly helpless in what we can do at this point however we do hope our small contribution to this record can raise some desperately needed funds for Doctors Without Borders in Gaza. Ceasefire Now. Free Palestine”

The music world continues to respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza, with Stormzy and Clairo announcing this week that they will appear at a benefit show in New Jersey on January 4 to raise money for Gaza, as well as Sudan.

Earlier this month, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were spotted attending a fundraising event for Gaza in Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Massive Attack speak out on their boycott of gigs in Israel since 1999

Massive Attack

Massive Attack have spoken out about their boycott of gigs in Israel since 1999.

The trip-hop group took to their official X/Twitter account to respond to someone’s comment about their performance in the country. “Your shows in Tel Aviv were fantastic,” read the tweet.

Massive Attack replied with: “Massive Attack have not performed (& will not perform) in Israel since the international request was made by Palestinian civic society & artistic institutions in 2002 (reiterated in 05 as BDS) as a form of non-violent pressure on Israel to end its brutal occupation of Palestine.

They continued: “The band took a decision not to perform in Israel in 1999 – some years before the Palestinian call for international boycott was made – based on our own observations of military oppression, occupation & apartheid.”

According to the BDS Movement website, “In 2005, Palestinian civil society organisations called for boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) as a form of non-violent pressure on Israel.”

It continued: “The BDS movement was launched by 170 Palestinian unions, refugee networks, women’s organisations, professional associations, popular resistance committees and other Palestinian civil society bodies.

“Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, the Palestinian BDS call urges nonviolent pressure on Israel until it complies with international law by meeting three demands: ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall, recognising the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality and respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194”

At the time of writing, at least 23,469 Palestinians have been killed and 59,604 injured in Israeli strikes on Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health (per Al Jazeera). Roughly around 1,200 Israelis have been killed since October 7.

Last year, Massive Attack teamed up with Fontaines D.C. and Young Fathers for a limited edition 12” single to support the charity Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

100 per cent of the profits from the single will be donated to the charity to help their emergency operations in Gaza and the West Bank. In a statement, the artists have also called for an immediate ceasefire in the region, “in solidarity with the Palestinian people living under a brutal military operation”

Elsewhere, the band are set to headline the 2024 edition of MEO Kalorama. They also their first live UK show in five years in 2024 with a summer climate action event in Bristol. Visit here for any remaining tickets.

Back in October, their guitarist Angelo Bruschini died just months after revealing his lung cancer diagnosis. The news was shared by the band, who described the guitarist as “a singularly brilliant & eccentric talent”.

Dua Lipa says new “psychedelic-pop-infused” album is inspired by Primal Scream and Massive Attack

Dua Lipa has shared that her upcoming “psychedelic-pop-infused” album was inspired by the likes of Primal Scream and Massive Attack.

The pop singer previously opened up about the album’s sound in an interview with iHeartRadio, and said that the new record will have a “psychedelic throughline”.

“All other songs on the album are quite different, but they do have a very psychedelic throughline overall,” she said. “‘Houdini’ has so much electronic variety, but at same time it has a lot of interesting instrumentation and feels very organic as well…that’s something I really wanted to convey on the album.”

Now, in a new profile with Rolling Stone, the ‘Dance The Night Away’ singer revealed more of the influences for her LP.

In the profile, journalist Brittany Spanos wrote that Lipa referred to the album as a “psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to U.K. rave culture,” with heavy inspiration from Primal Scream’s 1991 LP ‘Screamadelica’ and Massive Attack. Other inspirations for the album include Britpop legends like Oasis and Blur, as well as ’90s rock and electronic acts like Moby and Gorillaz.

“This record feels a bit more raw. I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad. You can’t change it. You just have to roll with the punches of whatever’s happening in your life,” Lipa told the publication.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lipa spoke about meeting Tame Impala‘s Kevin Parker back in July 2022.  “I was so nervous because I’m just such a fan of Kevin’s,” she said, adding that Parker was “quite shy in the beginning.”

From there, the two teamed up with Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle (Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX), and Tobias Jesso Jr. (Adele, Niall Horan) and created eight of the 11 tracks on the album. “I remember thinking it was a genius move to get that combination of people together,” Parker told the outlet.

Lipa also spoke about how challenging it was to open up and bring new people into her creative world. “As things get bigger, you get more scared to open up and be vulnerable and sit down in a room and just speak from the heart,” she said.

In other news, Lipa is on the 2024 Academy Awards shortlist for Best Original Song for ‘Dance The Night’ in Barbie. Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo have also made the shortlist.

She is also set to perform at the 2024 Grammys alongside Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo.

‘One Day’ review: an addictive TV romcom to rival ‘Normal People’

One Day

One Day fans can breathe a sigh of relief. This adaptation of David Nicholls’ mega-selling 2009 novel really improves on the 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. In fairness, it helps that Nicholls’ book has an episodic format that lends itself better to a TV series than a two-hour movie. But it also helps that this version has no crimes against dialect to rival Hathaway’s laboured Leeds accent.

Nicholls’ novel revisits friends with chemistry Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew on the same July day for 20 years. Steered by lead writer Nicole Taylor (Jessie Buckley vehicle Wild Rose), this glossy Netflix adaptation follows that format pretty faithfully. For most of the series, we check in on Emma and Dexter once a year, but things speed up at the end to wind up the story in 14 episodes. Their roughly 30-minute runtime is possibly inspired by another series based on a popular romantic novel, 2020’s Normal People, but either way, it works well here. Though One Day never achieves Normal People‘s searing emotional intensity, it’s still an affecting portrait of two people whose flaws and fortunes ebb and flow until they’re finally in sync.

Bookish, principled Emma (Ambika Mod) and rakish, privileged Dexter (Leo Woodall) first connect in 1988 on their final day at Edinburgh University. They don’t actually sleep together, but there’s enough of a spark for them to keep in touch as their lives take divergent paths. Dexter breezes into a meaningless career as a faux-geezery TV presenter and Emma parks her dreams of becoming a playwright to train as a teacher. While Dexter coasts through his twenties on charm, short-term romances and coke, Emma gets stuck in a consolation prize relationship with geeky would-be comedian Ian (Jonny Weldon).

One Day captures the buzz and boorishness of the Britpop era through Dexter’s terrible post-pub TV show and a banging ’90s soundtrack featuring Elastica, Cornershop and Massive Attack, but at heart it’s a character study. As Dexter is undone by his entitlement and lack of direction, Emma gradually learns to step out of her way and channel her intelligence into something meaningful. Rod and Woodall, who previously shone in This Is Going To Hurt and The White Lotus respectively, are both so compelling that mid-season episodes focusing solely on one character don’t feel like throwaways. Crucially, they also sparkle when they’re on screen together.

Because the series focuses so closely on its leads, some supporting characters including Emma’s effervescent bestie Tilly (Amber Grappy) are underdeveloped. For the same reason, perhaps, comedic scenes featuring the wider ensemble cast have a slightly broad, sitcom-like vibe. Fortunately, there aren’t enough of these to be off-putting, so One Day glides as confidently as Dexter to its big emotional climax. Even if you remember what happens from the book, you’ll still come away with moistened eyes wondering, gulp, what might have been.

‘One Day’ is available on Netflix from February 8

'One Day'

A new television adaptation of the best-selling David Nicholls novel One Day has just arrived on Netflix, but what songs are on the show’s soundtrack?

All fourteen episodes of the show were released to the streaming platform on February 8, with the lead roles being taken by Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod. The supporting cast also includes Essie Davis, Tim McInnerny and Joely Richardson.

Woodall is best known for playing Jack in the second season of HBO drama The White Lotus, while Mod came to greater attention by playing the character Shruti in This is Going to Hurt.

Nicholls’ novel was published in 2009 and follows the lives of its two protagonists by documenting one day from each year of their lives over the course of two decades. This adaptation follows on from a 2011 film version, which starred Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and was met with many negative reviews.

In a four star review of the show, NME wrote: “One Day fans can breathe a sigh of relief. This adaptation of David Nicholls’ mega-selling 2009 novel really improves on the 2011 film.”

“Even if you remember what happens from the book, you’ll still come away with moistened eyes wondering, gulp, what might have been.”
